Organic Pixels

Organic Pixels uses a TS-1635 to bring endless creativity into animations

  • Background

Organic Pixels is a well-known animation production team in the Taiwanese movie industry. It was co-founded by its leader Su Bowei and several friends who are equally keen on creativity and who want to challenge traditional design frameworks. Organic Pixels was established in 2007, initially focusing on graphic design, and now on animation. Through exchange and cooperation with different industries, Organic Pixels are also actively working in areas such as music videos, movie and corporate brand image, and provide customers with a full range of video and audio products.

In recent years, Organic Pixels has won the Best Visual Effects of Taiwan's Golden Horse Awards in 2014 with the film "Design 7 Love". It also produced many well-known domestic music videos including Dancing Van Gogh (Stefanie Sun) and Mid Summer Light (Mayday). In addition, it has also won the British OneDotZero, Germany Red Dot Design Award, International Asia-Pacific Advertising Festival Adfest, Cannes Advertising Festival Golden Lion Award and Taiwan 4A Creative Award, confirming its status as a new star in Taiwan.

  • Challenges

    Huge storage needs:
Like with all creative studios, with the steady growth of customer cases, Organic Pixels' demand for storage space is also steadily increasing. An animation film project often includes several terabytes of data. If the data is stored using external hard drives, there are concerns on data corruption and costly rescue expenses. As for public cloud services, there are concerns of service unavailability and data/bandwidth costs. Organic Pixels needs a large-capacity storage solution that combines the advantages of privacy, security, and scalability

    Data transfer is time-consuming:
In the early days, Organic Pixels' network environment was not perfect and transfer speeds were slow, hogged network bandwidth and affected work progress. As customers make changes more and more frequently, similar problems are encountered again and again. For Organic Pixels employees, looking for storage devices with high-speed data transfer speed is a top priority to solve existing network environment problems.

Solution

In consideration of the need for large storage and fast data transfer at work and after many comparisons, Organic Pixels chose the 16-bay large-capacity QNAP TS-1635. With the Annapurna Labs Alpine AL-514 quad-core 1.7 GHz processor and dual 10GbE SFP + network ports, the TS-1635 effectively meets the demands of massive network data transfers. It is also futureproofed by supporting up to 16GB RAM. Organic Pixels chose eight HGST Ultrastar 7K6000 Series 4TB hard drives with 7,200 RPM high-speed performance to provide reliable data read and write speed.

  • High CP value high-capacity storage space

The TS-1635 supports twelve 3.5-inch hard disks and four 2.5-inch SSDs. Organic Pixels flexibly connects the host TS-1635 to a QNAP TS-831X spare NAS using QNAP's exclusive storage expansion technology VJBOD (Virtual JBOD) to allocate 80TB storage space. For Organic Pixels running cross-industry collaboration projects, the QNAP TS-1635, with its high potential storage capacity and flexible expansion features, is an economical and affordable storage backup solution .

  • Improve data backup and disaster recovery

Data security is of paramount importance for creative studios, as any lost data may cripple entire projects. The TS-1635 has built-in snapshot and transfer data encryption capabilities to reduce the risk of data loss.

  • 10GbE transmission for improved work efficiency

Multimedia projects can generate huge files, and this can cause bottlenecks in traditional networks. File transfer has always been a problem that could not be solved by Organic Pixels. The QNAP TS-1635 features two built-in 10GbE SFP+ ports, providing a 10GbE network infrastructure for meeting the file transfer demands of Organic Pixels. On average, a 4-minute music video (including all the raw materials and videos) would take up to 3TB. In a 10GbE environment, the TS-1635 can achieve nearly 1GB of transfer per second. This is a vast improvement compared to traditional networks, thus optimizing Organic Pixels team workflow and significantly improving work efficiency.

  • Simple file sharing and online editing

The TS-1635 features an FTP server for cross-platform file sharing, so a variety of images and video files can easily be previewed and shared through the NAS. The TS-1635's quad-core processor and powerful performance allows creators to open files directly on the NAS, then use graphics software, video editing software to modify or archive the files. In the past, one would have to download the files to a workstation, and then re-upload once the editing was complete.

  • With HGST Ultrastar 7K6000 hard drive, operating efficiency is improved further

HGST has always been the preferred brand of primary choice for Organic Pixels since it started using NAS as its primary storage device. In addition to support for SATA 6Gb/s transfer speed, HGST Ultrastar 7K6000 4TB hard drives also have high-speed hard disk read and write, low energy usage, and other features. Even in high-temperature and high-pressure operating environments, the HGST Ultrastar series still provides high storage efficiency, reducing the risk of data corruption or loss.

Results

The QNAP TS-1635 provides 16-bay hard drive capacity which not only allows Organic Pixels to easily store all types of audio and video files, its convenient VJBOD virtual storage expansion technology also increases deployment flexibility of storage space. The two built-in 10GbE SFP + network ports also provide a solid foundation for high-speed file transfer environment. QNAP's comprehensive file backup and snapshot capabilities, combined with the performance of HGST Ultrastar series hard drives, provide 24/7 protection of Organic Pixels precious works of various periods. In addition, QNAP provides quick and easy data sharing, collaborative editing and multi-functional mobile apps, which also make Organic Pixels employees really enjoy the convenience of modern digital cloud technology.
